Pack 707’s Epic Cub Family Campout at Camp Ho Non Wah

This past weekend, Pack 707 embarked on an unforgettable Cub Family Campout at Camp Ho Non Wah, and what a weekend it was! With 13 out of our 14 registered scouts in attendance, our pack came together for a weekend full of adventure, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories.

Friday Night: Setting the Stage for Adventure

Families arrived throughout the evening, with most scouts setting up camp Friday night while a few arrived early Saturday morning. Tents were pitched, sleeping bags rolled out, and the anticipation for the next day’s activities filled the air.

As night fell, a brilliant sky of stars and a glowing moon provided the perfect backdrop for our first evening in camp. The campfire’s warm light flickered across Bohicket Campsite, illuminating the smiles of scouts playing and adults mingling. The scout spirit was alive and well, but soon it was time to settle in. As the camp grew quiet, only the sounds of nature remained, gently lulling everyone to sleep.

Saturday: A Full Day of Scouting Fun

There’s no need for alarm clocks when you’re pack camping—our scouts’ internal clocks took care of that! As the sun rose, gold pack shirts were thrown on, and it was time for breakfast. Biscuits and gravy, eggs, and a yogurt bar fueled us up for the day ahead.

The morning kicked off with the official opening ceremony. Packs lined up, and Pack 707 proudly led the way. With flags raised high, the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Law, and Scout Oath echoed across camp. But wait—what’s that? Announcements, announcements, announcements! Pack 707 showed everyone that even announcements can be fun, starting the day off with enthusiasm and laughter.

Then, it was time for the fun to begin!

Throughout the day, Camp Ho Non Wah buzzed with energy as scouts rotated through canoeing, archery, BB shooting, wrist rockets, arts and crafts, and songs and skits. And of course, no Cub Scout campout is complete without the intense, gladiator-like battles in the Gaga pit! Scouts competed fiercely, channeling their best Roman warrior spirit (or at least that’s what it felt like!).

Midday brought a much-needed break for lunch—chicken nuggets and fries were on the menu, and Pack 707 took the meal back to camp for a relaxing picnic-style lunch. After refueling, it was back to the stations to squeeze in as much fun as possible before dinner!

Saturday Night: Skits, Songs & An Epic Battle for the Spirit Stick

As the sun dipped lower, dinner was served—chicken bog with ice cream for dessert. But with campfire ahead, it was time to practice skits and get ready to perform. Pack 707 had signed up for two skits, and our scouts were determined to put on a show!

The Campfire Program at Camp Ho Non Wah is something special. The council ring, nestled along the Bohicket River, is a breathtaking sight. The Spanish moss swayed gently in the trees, the moon shone bright, and the fire blazed at the heart of the gathering.

Songs were sung, and Pack 707 proudly performed the first skit of the night—the "Infant Tree Skit." Lion Noah, Tigers Jude, Kingston, Aaron, and Maddox, along with Webelo Holden, bravely kicked off the performances. Later, Wolves Elle and Ian, Bear Reagann, and Webelos Isaac and Airabella had the crowd laughing with their "Clean Socks Skit."

But wait—what about the adults? An intense game of musical chairs was about to begin, and it wasn’t for the faint of heart. 17 adults, including five from Pack 707, competed for the coveted Adult Spirit Stick. The final showdown came down to Pack 707’s Mr. Joseph and four-time champion Mr. Andrew from Pack 63. The crowd held its breath as the two circled the last remaining chair, the tension mounting. In the end, Mr. Andrew claimed victory yet again—but not without a fierce challenge from Pack 707!

A Moment of Reflection: Flag Retirement Ceremony

As the campfire festivities concluded, a flag retirement ceremony led by Mr. Gary of Pack 396 brought a reverent close to the night. Scouts, leaders, and families honored the American flag, retiring those deemed no longer fit for presentation.

Each flag was respectfully placed in the fire, with scouts stepping forward to participate in this powerful and solemn tradition. Tears were shed, and reverence filled the air as the flames carried each flag to rest.

Sunday: A Peaceful Closing to an Incredible Weekend

Daylight Savings Time stole an hour of sleep, but that didn’t stop the scouts from waking early once again! As tents were packed and gear was loaded into cars, Pack 707 made sure to leave our campsite better than we found it, staying true to our Leave No Trace ideals.

A quick grab-and-go breakfast of sausage biscuits gave everyone a final boost of energy before heading to the Scout’s Own Interfaith Worship Service at the chapel. With the marsh providing a beautiful backdrop, Mr. Gary led a wonderful service, allowing scouts and families to reflect on the weekend’s experiences.

A Weekend to Remember

And just like that, Cub Family Campout 2025 came to an end. Final goodbyes were shared, cars were loaded, and families departed, taking nothing but memories and leaving nothing but footprints.

It was a weekend full of adventure, fun, scouting traditions, and camaraderie. Until next time, Camp Ho Non Wah!
