As part of a busy summer of Scouting, five Scouts from Pack 742 traveled to Wadmalaw Island from June 29 to July 2 for three nights of fun, challenge, and growth at Cub Resident Camp. Hosted at Camp Ho Non Wah, this year’s theme — “Going Buggie” — added a playful twist to a classic outdoor experience packed with skill-building and adventure.
Scouts Elle, Reagann, Airabella, Holden, and Jude took part in a wide range of camp activities, including swimming, boating, BB shooting, archery, crafts, ecology, Scout skills, and more. Supporting them throughout the trip were Pack 742 leaders Joseph, Ben, Brandy, and Monica, who volunteered their time to supervise, encourage, and guide the group.
The Scouts had the chance to take part in several memorable evening programs. On Sunday night, they kicked things off with a relaxing movie during cracker barrel, watching A Bug’s Life under the pavilion. Monday night brought a powerful cultural experience as camp hosted a Powwow presented by members of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s national honor society. The Scouts were introduced to a variety of regalia styles and traditional Native American dance styles, accompanied by intense drumming and singing. Not only did the Scouts watch the performance — they were invited to join in, learning some of the dances themselves.
Tuesday evening’s closing campfire was a highlight for the whole pack. Pack 742 took the stage to perform their version of the “Genie” skit, which got great laughs from the crowd. The campfire featured songs, skits, and energy from both Cub Scouts and staff. During the ceremony, Pack 742 received its first official ribbon for its new pack flag, a proud moment marking the pack’s continued growth.
Scouts also embraced the waiter rotation system in the dining hall. One Scout per table was assigned to arrive early, set up the table, serve food, and clean up after the meal. Though it might have seemed like a chore at first, the Scouts quickly took pride in the responsibility and supported each other in the process — rotating each meal and handling the task with maturity and teamwork.
The heat was real, but the hydration was serious. Scouts stayed cool and safe by drinking lots and lots and lots of water. (If you know, you know.)
Camp Ho Non Wah once again delivered a memorable, meaningful program. Pack 742 is proud of its Scouts for stepping up, joining in, and representing the pack with enthusiasm.
The summer’s not over yet — and the adventures will keep rolling.
